Antonia learned the art from her father, and then mastered her techniques with the help of her father-in-law. She has been involved in the process her whole life. She started out dyeing yarn for her other family members to weave and then more recently stepped up to design as well, with Tomás working by her side. Typically Antonia initiates the design process, and her husband Tomás weaves the samples; they tag-team the entire process like that, until the product is tagged and shipped!
“When he completes a step, I take up the next one and so on. We share everything, including work, caring for the children and the house,” said Antonia.
Amtonia's favorite part of the process is choosing the colors and Zapotec patterns for a particular bag. Her favorite creation is the Alchemy Tote - she especially loves the design on that style of tote.
Antonia says that adapting her designs and colors to the taste of the international market has been an exciting challenge. She produces some of MZ's most loved designs. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies, enjoying their peaceful village with friends and family, and cooking Oxacan dished like chepiles and nopales.
